Wicked China – So Wickedly Good!

Wicked China, is a place absolutely bursting with character and colour, serving an assortment of Chinese and Chindian (Indianized Chinese) dishes. As a “authentic cuisine” snob, it is challenging for me to accept Chindian dishes. A cuisine, which over the years I have, slowly and methodically, erased from my childhood memories. But at Wicked China, they recreate these dishes into masterpieces, where you forget to dissect and judge through your “cynicism” filter and just enjoy the taste, the sensation and let the smells and flavours bring back the memories!

The ambiance and feel of the place is another factor that makes this place so charming. Colourful and artfully designed, hand painted murals complete with superheros and great music just render an amazing feel. It’s a place go to have fun!

Kala Khatta Slush – Intense, sweet, sour and refreshing. Loved it.

Black Hearted – A black coffee based mocktail. Pretty amazing combination of sweet and tangy. Not enough coffee for me but probably not everybody likes black coffee like me.

Dumplings – We were served Prawn & Chive and Fish & Chilly dumplings. The Fish and Chilly, especially, was fantastic. Delicate flavour of the fish with a bit of heat from the chilly and a super sour and vinegar-y sauce. Absolutely loved the combination, though could be too sour for some (not for me!)

Turnip Cake with Burnt Garlic and Chillies – Really nice deep fried and crispy with great punch from the garlic and chillies.

The Crispy Prawn and Chinese Mushroom Cheung Fun was delicious. Really delicate casing and crispy and juicy filling.

Drunken Chicken Cigar Rolls were good but the rum flambe done at the table for dramatic effect, rendered some of them soggy and bitter. Without that, they were really quite good. Looked smashing too!

Wicked Filo Spring Rolls were crispy but slightly bland, making the accompanying sauces necessary.

Sichuan Chicken – One of the stars of the starters. Not your typical red and overly spicy “Shezwan”. Great flavour, amazing sauce and just the right amount of heat. Chindian, but really tasty.

After the pretty amazing starters, it was time for the mains to shine. But it was a bit of a mixed bag for me.

The Braised Lamb with Pak Choy and Chinese Mushrooms just knocked it out of the park. Dark intense flavour, beautiful succulent lamb and unbelievable sauce. A must try!

The Mushroom Pot had quite a strong and sort of pungent sauce which I could not warm up to. The glass noodles mixed into the dish also didn’t really go well with it. The slimy texture and pungent taste made it a bit of a no no for me.

Hakka Noodles and Fried Rice offered up a familiar and very comforting taste. The accompanying Sweet and Sour Chicken though was a pass for me. It was too sweet and probably the “Chindian” nostalgia was wearing off slightly.

Wicked China has the same owners as the Sassy Spoon and Sassy Teaspoon and you know what that means – Incredible desserts. They were to die for. Nothing really Chinese or Chindian about them (crispy honey noodles, anyone?) but great desserts with an Asian  twist. Absolutely mind boggling stuff.

Jasmine Tea and Dragon Fruit Mousse was so beautiful it could be a centre piece at an art museum. It tasted as good as well. The mousse was light and flavourful and the combination of the tangy tropical fruits (dragon fruit, kiwi and mango), the sauce, cream and crispy elements was just beautiful.

Flourless Chocolate Cake was really gooey and tasty but the Basil Ice Cream served along with it just stole it’s thunder. So fresh and amazing. My brain still can’t comprehend the how the flavour of basil worked in a sweet creamy ice cream, but I didn’t even try to. I just closed my eyes and enjoyed it.

The Lemongrass Creme Brulee was another hit. Some classic Asian flavours in a very French dessert. Worked great!

As you can imagine, I really had a blast at Wicked China. Yes, some dishes need a bit of tweaking but overall the flavour factor is pumped up to eleven here. Some Chinese – some Chindian dishes, with a masterful twist and a place that makes you extremely happy. The service, the ambiance, the location, the cocktails and the food put a huge smile on our faces. It was a blast and the desserts just blew our minds. Wicked China is great place to hang out, go on a date or even just have a quiet lazy meal. Definitely one of the must visit places for me!
